Canelo Alvarez vs Gennadiy Golovkin III is on

After two contentious fights Canelo Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin are set to complete their trilogy

THE third fight between Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin has been confirmed. It will take place on  September 17, though the exact location is not yet certain. Boxing News understands that the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas was looking likeliest to host the world super-middleweight title bout after a scheduling clash ruled out the 65,000-seater Allegiant Stadum. The showdown, promoted by Matchroom, will be on DAZN pay-per-view in the USA and, in the UK, it’s looking likely that subscribers will have to pay extra for the first time – though this is yet to be confirmed.

The contest between the old rivals was expected to be announced in the immediate aftermath of the Mexican’s light-heavyweight bout with Dmitry Bivol, until the Russian won. Canelo considered an immediate rematch with Bivol but will go ahead with the original plan of taking on Golovkin instead. At a press conference to promote a new golfing venture on Monday, Álvarez Told ESPN Deportes that “GGG” will be his next opponent, with a Bivol to follow.  “Surely yes [Golovkin comes next],” he said. “We already had that contract, that deal, so we have to continue what we started,” he said. “And I think they are the two most important fights in boxing – the fight with Golovkin and the rematch with Bivol because unfortunately we lost, but that doesn’t mean that I’m not going to try again… The important thing is perseverance and we are going to do it again… What is certain is that we will return in September and these days, today, tomorrow, the day after, we are going to announce the fight, only we have to wait a little.”

Their first encounter, in September 2017, ended contentiously with Álvarez widely considered lucky to get the draw. The rematch, one year later, was won by Canelo on a split decision.
