Indian Super League (ISL) side, Odisha FC have reached an agreement with Josep Gombau to take over as the head coach for the men’s senior team ahead of the upcoming 2022/23 season, with the Spaniard agreeing to a two-year deal.
This deal marks the return of Gombau to Odisha after a two-year absence with the 46-year-old initially signing for them in 2019, where he became a fan favourite based on his style of play.
The 46-year-old who is a former Barcelona youth team coach has tasted success at Kitchee SC in Hong Kong and Adelaide United in Australia – with the Spaniard coming in for high praise for trying to educate the players on the technical aspects in the mould of the Catalan giants.
“Josep, he produces good footballing teams. His teams play good football. If we give the ball away to them, we know they’ve got the capability of looking after it. We always need to be switched on against them,” Former Chennaiyin boss and Hero ISL 2017-18-winning head coach John Gregory once commented on Gombau.
“After 2 years, the team will return to Odisha. We are back home. We have the responsibility to make the fans who come to the Kalinga Stadium enjoy our football. We will need the support of all the fans. Ama Team. Ama Game,” the Spaniard added on his return to Odisha.
