Nemanja Matic closing in on Roma move after Man Utd exit

Nemanja Matic is on the verge of another reunion with Jose Mourinho with the midfielder set to sign for Roma.

The former Serbia international confirmed in recent months that he would not be renewing his contract at Manchester United and would leave the club on a free transfer this summer, bringing the curtain down on a five-year spell with the Red Devils.

Matic was brought to Old Trafford back in 2017 by Mourinho, who he also opted to bring back to Chelsea during his time in charge at Stamford Bridge in 2014.

And Gianluca Di Marzio reports that the two are set to be reunited in the Italian capital with a move to Roma all but complete.

Listen now to 90min’s brand new podcast, Talking Transfers, with Scott Saunders, Graeme Bailey & Toby Cudworth. This week they discuss whether Sadio Mane will leave Liverpool for Bayern Munich, Manchester United’s pursuit of Benfica striker Darwin Nunez, Newcastle’s plans for Moussa Diaby and Sven Botman & Jorginho’s future at Chelsea.

He adds that Matic’s experience, reliability and leadership have been strongly desired by Mourinho, who has repeatedly insisted that he wants to continue building a project at Roma.

Matic will become just the second player to feature under Mourinho at three different clubs after Ricardo Carvalho for Chelsea, Porto and Real Madrid.

Meanwhile, 90min understands that Paris Saint-Germain are eyeing the Portuguese tactician as a potential replacement for Mauricio Pochettino, with Mourinho close with incoming sporting director Luis Campos.

However, his commitment to Roma remains thorough and PSG would struggle to convince him to leave the Stadio Olimpico at this time.
