Here’s why Chiefs are unlikely to trade for Deebo Samuel

The Kansas City Chiefs are not expected to be in the mix to trade for San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel.

Even with Deebo Samuel wanting out, here is why the Kansas City Chiefs are not a realistic trade destination for the San Francisco 49ers wide receiver this offseason.

Jeffri Chadiha of NFL.com reported on Thursday morning the Chiefs are not expected to trade for a star wide receiver this offseason. Whether it is Samuel, DK Metcalf of the Seattle Seahawks, A.J. Brown of the Tennessee Titans or Terry McLaurin of the Washington Commanders, those four options “are probably all long shots at this point.” Kansas City is not about to pay top-dollar here.

Factor in the Chiefs trading away Tyreek Hill because he became too expensive, it makes all the sense in the world why Kansas City will address the wide receiver position with one of their two first-round picks on Thursday night.

Kansas City Chiefs not expected to trade for Deebo Samuel this offseason

With the Chiefs having already added JuJu Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling in NFL free agency, there is simply not enough money to go around for the Chiefs to trade for a third veteran wide receiver. By being patient and using either top-32 pick on a wide receiver, the Chiefs could have theoretically five years of control on a coveted receiver prospect coming out of college.

Frankly, first-round picks have become slightly undervalued for that reason. It has become increasingly popular for players taken in day two of their respective NFL Drafts to demand a new contract before even getting to year four. Underpaid for three years no doubt, but they will be making more money than first-round draft classmates who are playing on their fifth-year option.

Admittedly, it is not a complete inefficiency at this point, but one certainly trending in that direction. As for what the Chiefs should do, they should draft a wide receiver with huge upside with either first-round pick. This player can have massive boom-or-bust potential, but if he cannot succeed in Kansas City, where was he going to succeed? For the money, it is the logical draft move.

As soon as the Chiefs traded Hill, they were immediately removed from the Samuel sweepstakes.
