The Kansas City Chiefs added a plethora of talent in this year’s NFL Draft, meaning some veterans might be shown the door.Â
The Kansas City Chiefs may have lost Super Bowl 55, but they have won the offseason thanks to the brilliant work of general manager Brett Veach. After impressive work in free agency and the trade block, the Chiefs massively improved their roster with the young talent they selected in the 2021 NFL Draft.
With the Chiefs adding six prospects to their roster, that means there will be competitions for positions on the 53-man roster for the 2021 season. As for who will be in the most danger of losing a spot, here are three that stand out.
3.
Gehrig Dieter
WR Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs did have an issue at the wide receiver position. While they did try to pry JuJu Smith-Schuster away from the Pittsburgh Steelers, it was unsuccessful. Not only that, but they allowed Sammy Watkins to sign on with the Baltimore Ravens. However, the Chiefs did make an addition via the NFL Draft, and that is Clemson’s Cornell Powell.
With the former Tigers player on the roster, there will be an extensive competition to fill out the wide receiver depth chart. With Tyreek Hill, Mecole Hardman, Demarcus Robinson and Powell all essentially locked in to a roster spot, there are plenty of other receivers left on the depth chart. If there is one player that could be cut, it is Gehrig Dieter.
The wideout has been with the Chiefs organization since 2017, where he has logged two receptions for 32 yards on five targets through 10 regular-season games.
Yes, the team did sign Dieter to a futures deal this offseason, but they also has the likes of Byron Pringle, Antonio Callaway and Tajae Sharpe on the roster. While Dieter does have knowledge of the Chiefs’ offense, he could have a tough hill to climb to make the roster.
