2022 NFL Draft Watch List: Defense

(Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports)

Similar to the cornerback spot, there is a rumbling, or at least a murmuring, that one of the top players in next year’s draft could be a safety. Prior to the 2021 NFL draft Hall of Famer Gil Brandt perhaps kicked off the next cycle with a tweet outlining his top five players:

In that mix is Notre Dame’s Kyle Hamilton, a talented safety who just a few seasons ago was a four-star recruit and the fifth-ranked safety in the 2019 recruiting class according to 247Sports.com. He played in 13 games as a true freshman in 2019, but took over as the starter last season and was named a First-Team All-ACC selection thanks to his 63 total tackles and six pass breakups. But Hamilton is not the only player at this position to keep an eye on:

  • Kyle Hamilton, Notre Dame
  • Bubba Bolden, Miami
  • Marcus Hooker, Ohio State
  • Brandon Joseph, Northwestern
  • Tykee Smith, West Virginia
  • Keith Gallmon, South Alabama
  • Jordan Battle, Alabama
  • Leon O’Neal, Texas A&M
