Similar to the cornerback spot, there is a rumbling, or at least a murmuring, that one of the top players in next year’s draft could be a safety. Prior to the 2021 NFL draft Hall of Famer Gil Brandt perhaps kicked off the next cycle with a tweet outlining his top five players:
I put the 2021 draft to bed, starting on 2022:
My top 5 for 2022 (as of 4/19/21):
1. DE Kayvon Thibodeaux, @oregonfootball
2. S Kyle Hamilton, @NDFootball
3. CB Derek Stingley, Jr., @LSUfootball
4. DE Drake Jackson, @USC_FB
5. QB Sam Howell, @TarHeelFootball— Gil Brandt (@Gil_Brandt) April 19, 2021
In that mix is Notre Dame’s Kyle Hamilton, a talented safety who just a few seasons ago was a four-star recruit and the fifth-ranked safety in the 2019 recruiting class according to 247Sports.com. He played in 13 games as a true freshman in 2019, but took over as the starter last season and was named a First-Team All-ACC selection thanks to his 63 total tackles and six pass breakups. But Hamilton is not the only player at this position to keep an eye on:
- Kyle Hamilton, Notre Dame
- Bubba Bolden, Miami
- Marcus Hooker, Ohio State
- Brandon Joseph, Northwestern
- Tykee Smith, West Virginia
- Keith Gallmon, South Alabama
- Jordan Battle, Alabama
- Leon O’Neal, Texas A&M
