Royals place SP Zack Greinke on 15-day IL with right flexor strain

Kansas City Royals starting pitcher Zack Greinke has been placed on the 15-day injured list with a right flexor strain, the team announced on Monday.

Recently, Greinke has struggled on the mound, going 2-2 with a 9.50 ERA while allowing 19 earned runs over his last four starts.

In his most recent outing against the Minnesota Twins, Greinke pitched just four innings, allowing three home runs and five earned runs in a 7-3 loss.

“It’s just been sore and tight for a little bit,” Greinke told MLB.com’s Anne Rogers after Sunday’s loss to the Twins. “Stuff just doesn’t seem very sharp at the moment. Last couple of games, have given up home runs on pitches that guys have never hit. So that tells you that stuff isn’t sharp.”

This season, Greinke has a 4-6 record with a 5.05 ERA in 10 starts for the Royals.

The former AL Cy Young Award winner signed a one-year, $13 million contract with the Royals this offseason, re-joining the team that drafted him with the sixth overall pick in the 2002 draft. Greinke spent the first seven years of his career in Kansas City before being traded to the Milwaukee Brewers in 2010.Â
